6 New Deaths Push Indiana H1N1 Fatalities To 28

State Reports Decline In New Illnesses

POSTED: 10:55 am EST November 19, 2009

The Indiana State Department of Health said Thursday that an additional six people died from the H1N1 flu this week, pushing the total since June 1 to 28.

However, incidents of influenza-like illness were down for the second straight week, although still above the peak for the 2008-09 flu season.

The department doesn't release information about the circumstances of the deaths, but pre-existing conditions typically contribute to H1N1 fatalities.

A total of two people have died in Indiana from seasonal flu so far this season, officials said.

More than half the state's hospitals characterized the number of flu-related hospitalizations as more than average, down slightly from the previous week.

Nearly 440,000 Hoosiers have received the H1N1 vaccination, and about two-thirds of health workers have been inoculated, officials said.
