Pantries Struggle To Feed The Need This Holiday

Need Up More Than 50 Percent

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest meals of the year for many Hoosiers, but area food pantries are running dangerously low ahead of the holiday.

Increased demand and donations diminished by the struggling economy have left many facilities short on food and funds, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

At Mid-North Food Pantry on North Meridian Street, they said they've seen a 50 percent jump in people asking for help from this time last year.

"Our donations go up in this month, but, with the demand being greater, and the need being greater, it goes away real fast too," said Pantry Director Latasha Mobley.

Othelia James said she can't afford to buy enough food to last her through the month, and is grateful for the food pantry's help.

"I count my blessing for one, and I give them praise. Times get tough, but I'm making it," James said.

The Sharing Place, a food pantry on Indianapolis' east side, has seen an 80 percent increase in need over last year.

"The shelves were pretty packed last November with things for Thanksgiving, and this year, we just don't have it," said manager Nicole Anderson.

Both food pantries get supplies from Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, but are struggling to keep up with the growing need this Thanksgiving.

"As you're eating your food, there may be someone who doesn't have food to eat," Mobley said. "And if you just donate one canned good, it goes a long way."
