Indiana Child Deaths, Abuse Spur Call To Action

Church Holds 'Children's Blessing Service'

With recent stories of child abuse, neglect and death on their minds, hundreds of people took part in a "Children's Blessing Service" Sunday night, calling for an end to violence against children.

Just last week, a 1-year-old girl was found wandering alone on an Indianapolis street while clutching an ashtray. Police said her mother was drinking and doing drugs and didn't report her missing.

The crowd assembled at Light of the World Christian Church said horrific stories of neglect and abuse must end.

"Somebody has got to do something," one of the pastors exhorted the crowd. "I hear you screaming out, 'Not on my watch.'"

As the service took place in the sanctuary, a dozen community organizations offered resources in the church's lobby.

There were brochures about how to get involved in mentoring, foster or adoption of children and how to volunteer.

"Go outside of the church, into the communities and pull these babies in and let them know they can be whoever and whatever they want to be," one speaker pleaded.

"We have so many resources to help us to reach out to troubled teens and mothers or fathers that just need help," parent Roberta Townsell told 6 News’ Tanya Spencer.

At the end of the service, each child in attendance was prayed over, and parents left motivated. "We have to come together as one to stop all the violence and educate everybody," said one parent. "It's going to take time and effort."

A recent report that was released in October showed that Indiana has the nation's eighth-highest rate of child deaths from abuse and neglect, with about 50 children dying every year in Indiana.
