Teen Fired On By Trooper Had Fake Gun

Police: Teen Was Acting Suspicious, Struggled With Trooper

A 14-year-old who was shot at by a trooper did not have a real gun as initially was believed, state police said Tuesday.

The trooper pulled over the boy for speeding on Saturday on Indianapolis' west side. Police said the boy was acting nervous, reaching under his seat and struggled with the trooper outside the car before getting back in and taking off.

The trooper said he saw what he thought was a gun under the driver's seat and opened fire, blowing out two of the vehicle's tires.

Police said the replica was very realistic-looking.

"If somebody pointed a handgun like what I saw on the floorboard of that car at me, if they pointed it at me, I would shoot them," said 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten.

The boy is charged with battery of a police officer and disorderly conduct.
