Two 19-year-old men were charged Wednesday with murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in the slaying of a Village Pantry store clerk over the weekend, and disturbing details about the crime were made public.

Bruce Aldrich and Shawn Heyob robbed the store, at 1402 S. Meridian St., and Aldrich shot Becky Hough, 62, in the head during the robbery on Nov. 21, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Court documents revealed shocking details of the case and what led to the arrests of Aldrich and Heyob.

In the probable cause affidavit, Indianapolis police Detective Thomas Lehn said Aldrich admitted that he and Heyob robbed the store and said that he told Hough, "We just want your money," before he shot her in the head when she turned around.

Aldrich's girlfriend, Amanda Hall, 25, told investigators that Aldrich and Heyob had complained that they didn't have any money and that she saw Aldrich leave at about 5 a.m., just before the shooting, police said.

The affidavit indicated that Hall told Lehn that Aldrich and Heyob returned a short time later and that Aldrich "started crying and said he shot her because she hit him," while Heyob lamented, "I can't believe I dropped the cigarettes."

Police said cigarettes and other assorted items were stolen from the store during the robbery.

Hall's sister, Elizabeth Hall, told Lehn that she heard a conversation between Aldrich and Heyob that they were going to rob the store "because Becky was working."

Aldrich and Heyob were acquainted with Hough, and Heyob's mother had worked with her at the store, police said.

"She was not only just somebody who worked at VP, she was also a friend," Heyob's mother, Mary Hawkins told 6News' Derrik Thomas Wednesday. "I'm deeply sorry for their loss, but, at the same time, he is my son."

Police said they found multiple unopened packs of cigars at the home that Aldrich and Heyob were in before the shooting.

Both teens have criminal pasts. Aldrich was released from prison in August after he was convicted of carrying a firearm within one mile of school property and criminal recklessness.

Heyob was released from prison on Nov. 17 after serving time for theft, battery and criminal gang activity.

In pictures posted on Heyob's Myspace.com and Facebook.com pages, he was seen holding guns, pointing them at other people and flashing gang signs.

His mother said she doesn't know what to believe.

"It's very shocking to me that my son would do anything like this," Hawkins said. "I don't know what to say, but to her (Hough's) family I'd like to say I am very, very, sorry for your loss."

Hough had worked at the store for 23 years and was well-known in the community. Police said the Village Pantry had been robbed 28 times since 2000.
