A man was arrested Thursday evening in connection with a fatal shooting near an northeast side Indianapolis church Wednesday night, police said.

The shooting occurred just after 7:30 p.m. near the Greater Canaan Baptist Church at 2139 Sheldon Street, near Andrew J. Brown Avenue and East 21st Street, said Sgt. Paul Thompson.

Investigators said 43-year-old Gary Couch and his 19-year-old son, Michael Couch, got into an argument with 44-year-old Darryl Shepherd over garage rental space that Shepherd owns. Police said they believe Shepherd fired at the men, killing Gary Couch and wounding Michael Couch.

Shepherd then tried to drive away from the scene, but his car became stuck in the mud, so he ran, Thompson said.

Michael Couch, who was shot in the arm, was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Shepherd turned himself in near the crime scene Thursday afternoon, police said. He was questioned and then arrested and preliminarily charged with murder, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.

Thompson said the men did not have any connection to the church.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
