INDIANAPOLIS -- The family of a man shot and killed during a home-invasion robbery said he had just cashed a large check.Officers were called to a home at 4929 Lagora Lane near 38th Street and Georgetown Road on the city's northwest side just before 11 p.m., said Sgt. Paul Thompson. They found Gabriel Rivas, 25, shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.Investigators said they believe two people came into the home with the intention of robbing the residence.Rivas' younger brother, who was inside the house when the attacked happened, said money may have been the motive."He got his 401k check, he cashed it out. He had it in a safe," said John Flores. "They were like, 'Where is the money?' They tried to steal his money."Police said Rivas did not have a criminal history. Rivas' family said they believe he was targeted."No, no, no, he never had enemies," his father, Francisco Flores, said."My son is an angel, never, never," his mother, Bertha Benavides, said. "He is an angel."Neighbors said they are shocked that the violence was so close to home."It's not a very good way to spend the holidays. I feel sadness for his family," said Todd Federman. "His parents were here last night I could tell they were obviously really upset."Police said two men wearing down coats were seen running from the scene. They did not provide further suspect descriptions."That neighborhood is pretty quiet. We're trying to figure why that residence targeted," said Lt. Jeffrey Duhamell.Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
