Smoking Ban Plan Sent To Committee

Council Tables Indy Smoking Ban Expansion Monday

A decision on an expanded smoking ban plan in Marion County is on hold once again.

At its meeting Monday night, City-County Council members voted 20-7 to send the proposal back to committee for further discussion, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

The proposal's sponsor, Republican councilor Ben Hunter, said he believes more time is needed for discussion.

“I so move this back to committee to answer those questions from other councilors and explore those options instead of taking the time and doing it on the full floor of the council,” he said.

Libertarian councilor Ed Coleman drew applause from the audience when he told the council he believes sending the ban to a committee is the wrong move.

“I think it would be right for all the people here and all the people at home that we vote on this tonight and get it over with," he said.

Supporters of the expanded ban said they are fighting for the health of workers in smoking establishments.

“We have a lot of people who have asked for us to help them have a healthy work environment and we're not going to stop,” said Missy Lewis, of Smoke-Free Indy.

Opponent Brad Klopfenstein, of Save Indianapolis Bars, said he was glad to see the proposal go back to committee.

"That's kind of a victory for us because we want to go back to serving our customers and letting people live their lives without being bothered," he said. “There's ample smoking and non-smoking options for people who want to go out in the community."

It's not clear when the proposal will come before the full council again, but if it is passed, it would need the support of Mayor Greg Ballard, who said he would veto it because it would prohibit veterans from smoking at a VFW.
