A man convicted of critically wounding an Indianapolis police officer in a shooting in 2008 was sentenced Friday to 59 years in prison, the maximum possible sentence.

Reese, 37, was convicted last month in Porter County of attempted murder, resisting law enforcement and carrying a handgun without a license in the July 2008 shooting of Indianapolis police Officer Jason Fishburn.

Fishburn's family said they are glad the ordeal is over.

"Brian Reese is being held accountable for his actions, and he'll no longer be out there harming our community," said Fishburn's wife, Tanya Fishburn.

After the sentencing, Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi gave Fishburn back his badge, which had been held in evidence since the shooting.

"He's my hero. He's the city's hero," said Fishburn's father, Sgt. Dennis Fishburn. "And we're glad that justice was served today."

The shooting happened during a foot chase as officers tried to arrest Reese.

Fishburn, who was wounded in the head and chest, suffered permanent brain damage, but is back on the force and doing well on light duty.

Reese admitted shooting the officer but denied trying to kill him.

At the sentencing, two of Reese's daughters testified that it would hard on them if their father was sent away. The judge told them, "Choices have consequences. Your dad made bad choices. I'm sorry for your loss."

Reese still faces two unrelated murder charges. The first trial begins next month.
