A man was shot in the back, paralyzing him, in a home-invasion burglary on Indianapolis' east side Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened in the 2400 block of Coyner Avenue just after 1 p.m.

Indianapolis police said the victim, Maciej Zurawski, 40, went into his home and interrupted the burglary in progress.

"The suspect was armed, and apparently dropped a handgun, which discharged," said Sgt. Paul Thompson.

A second man who was in the home shot Zurawski twice, hitting him in the arm and back, before both men fled.

Zurawski was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to stable condition.

Neighbors told police they had seen two men running in the area. Terrance Turner and Terry Laderson, both 19, were later arrested on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness, burglary and carrying a handgun without a license.
