The owners of Kountry Kitchen opened their doors and their hearts to cook up a Christmas feast for 1,800 needy people on Christmas Day.

Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy were free for anyone who was hungry, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

"It's nice that everybody's on the lookout for more than just themselves and willing to share with everyone," said one man who received a free meal.

It was the third time the restaurant, at 1831 N. College Ave., offered free food on Christmas. Owners Cynthia and Isaac Wilson, along with numerous volunteers, made it all possible.

"Do we have a lot? No, but we feel that we have just a little bit more than some people, so we just feel like we have to give back," said owner Cynthia Wilson. "My husband and I don't exchange gifts. This is our Christmas gift to one another."

People stopped to grab meals throughout the day, and deliveries were made to homebound people and people who live under city bridges.

"It just means a lot to me," said one recipient. "Everybody in the community, this is great."

Hats, gloves and socks were given away to anyone who asked for them.

"I usually give money, but this year I didn't have the money to give, so I decided to give my time," said volunteer Marilyn Mosley. "Everyone is grateful that they have someplace to go, and it makes you feel good, too, to know you've helped out someone."

It was a double holiday for Jon Oren, who spent both Christmas and his birthday helping out.

"It's just my pleasure to meet some folks and wish them a Merry Christmas," he said.

The atmosphere was a bit chaotic, but everyone seemed to keep their holiday spirit through the day, sometimes breaking into song to remember what the holiday is all about.
