NEW PALESTINE, Ind. -- A scam is targeting Indiana residents who are receiving unemployment benefits.Candace Jones, of New Palestine, said she received a text message that urged her to update some information on an automated telephone number, 6News' Rick Hightower reported."I thought this was to get a new card, because mine was about to expire," Jones said. After she verified some personal information on the automated line, she became worried and called back to receive a chilling message."The telephone number you have just called has been disconnected because it may be involved in a scam," the message said. "No matter how real it seemed, that message was a trick."The Federal Trade Commission shut down the line to put a stop to a phishing scam."I was frantic to try to figure out what could I do, because we get paid tomorrow," Jones said. The Department of Workforce Development doesn't directly handle debit cards. That service is provided by Affiliated Computer Services, or ACS, a Washington, D.C., based contractor."We do not contact our cardholders by e-mail, text message or phone calls to request any sort of information from them," said Ken Ericson, of ACS.Ericson said that anyone who has a question regarding their account should call the number on the back of the debit card."I think we're real easy prey … for a lot of people because they know how desperate we are," said Jones, who hopes benefits will be in her account on Monday.Officials don't think the scam is widespread.
