UPDATED: 12:58 pm EST December 29, 2009

An Indiana University professor was fatally stabbed in his Bloomington home and police have arrested a man on a preliminary charge of murder.

Authorities did not immediately identify the 53-year-old man who was found dead Monday morning.

English Department chairman Jonathan Elmer confirmed Tuesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the victim was Don Belton, an assistant professor of English at IU.

Michael J. Griffin, 25, of Bloomington, was arrested and preliminarily charged with murder just before 2 a.m. Tuesday, said Bloomington police Lt. David Drake.

Belton was found at about 10 a.m. on Monday by a friend who came to his home in the 900 block of South Madison Street.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry into the home but that both the front and back doors were unlocked.

Drake said the knife believed to have been used in the crime was found during a search of Griffin's home.

Drake said Griffin was acquainted with the victim, who was stabbed several times.

Griffin was being held without bond Tuesday in the Monroe County Jail.
