Hoosiers Speed To Qualify For New Car Tax Credit

Offer Expires On Thursday

Some Hoosiers are speeding to their local dealerships in time to qualify for a new car tax credit set to expire this week.

As part of the stimulus package, consumers have until Thursday to complete a purchase of a brand new vehicle and have the sales tax qualify as tax deductible, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

The tax credit is good for taxes up to $49,500, and applies to new vehicle purchases between Feb. 17 and the end of the year.

At this week's Indianapolis Auto Show at the Indiana Convention Center there was no shortage of people looking at new cars, and many were talking about the credit.

"People do seem to be mentioning it as they walk through. Not necessarily to me, but to their husband, to their wife," said Connie Tucker, an auto sales associate.

But some spectators said that while the credit sounds like a good idea, they're just not ready to buy right now.

"If I was in a position to buy a new car today, most definitely (I would like the tax credit), because that's a big plus for sure," said Greg Flagler.

The auto show runs Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Visit IRS.gov for more information and a complete list of qualifications for the tax credit.
