Dozens of Indianapolis families are still seeking answers in killings that will likely remain unsolved this year.

Of the 97 criminal homicides in Indianapolis in 2009 as of Monday, 31 remained unsolved, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

"To not have a result is just very difficult," said Vicky Bratt, whose best friend, fellow Lawrence school teacher Sandy Bartenbach, was found dead in her home in September. "It really plays in your mind and makes your mind go places that are just horrible."

Randall Shannon said he is still dealing with the killing of his daughter, a mother of three, who was found stabbed to death in October.

"I love her," he said. "I want them to find out who did this."

The solve rate for homicides in Indianapolis is fairly high when compared to the rest of the country. In 2009, 68 percent of killings have resulted in arrests, versus just more than 50 percent nationwide.

Still, for those close to the victims, every new day is another of not knowing what happened.

"For her life to have been taken in such a horrible, horrible way, it just doesn't make sense," said Bratt. "I don't want her file to be in a drawer and forgotten."

Anyone with information about an unsolved homicide is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted online at www.crimetips.org.

Tipsters can remain anonymous, and may be eligible for a cash reward.
