Neighbors Asked To Rank Worst Problem Properties

Communities To List 5 Worst Houses

City leaders are asking neighbors for their input on ranking Indianapolis' worst problem properties.

The My Neighborhood initiative is part of Mayor Greg Ballard's push to rid the city of abandoned properties, 6News' Joanna Massee reported.

City officials will review the list provided by neighbors, research the properties and then work with residents to find a solution.

For Earnest Holly, who lives next to a vacant house, that day can't come fast enough.

"I know it's a lot of rodents and what not that lives inside of there, such as raccoons and mice," she said. "I know the mice actually come into my house."

Billy Bowman said he deals with a similar problem. He and his grandmother live next to a house that is scheduled for a demolition hearing.

"I think it's taken way too long for them to do anything about it," he said. "They've been trying to get something done for the last few years, and it's just taken forever and forever and ever."

Janna Mayes, assistant administrator of abandoned buildings, said progress is slow, but changes are being made in neighborhoods across the city.

She said crews tear down about 10 homes a week.

"What's really difficult is there is funding, (it's) sometimes difficult because there is a limited amount of funds," Mayes said. "I think when you look at the neighborhood if you talk to somebody in the neighborhood and they live next to that, they say yes, we're seeing progress."

6News was unable to reach the owners of the vacant homes near Holly or Bowman.
