A makeshift mask of women's panties didn't help a Franklin man elude police after they said he held up an area convenience store.

The Clark Oil Gas Station in the 400 block of Jefferson Street was robbed Monday night by a man carrying a large knife and wearing underwear to cover his face, Franklin Police Lt Chris Tennell told 6News' Ericka Flye.

The man grabbed a customer and then took off with cash, cigarettes and a lighter, Tennell said.

Both the clerk and the customer were able to give police detailed descriptions of the suspected robber, and officers set up surveillance near his home.

Tennell said they later spotted Larry Bernard, 54, staggering and intoxicated, with a 12-inch kitchen knife in his waistband.

Officers also recovered women's panties, cash, cigarettes and a lighter matching the one stolen from the store in his pockets, Tennell said.

Police said no surveillance video was available from the crime.

Bernard was being held in the Johnson County Jail early Wednesday on $21,000 bond.
