Frequent Electrical Fires Worry Apartment Residents

4 Electrical Fires At Complex Since Mid-December

Residents of an Indianapolis apartment complex said they're worried about their safety after a recent spate of electrical fires.

Four electrical fires have been reported at Mariners Village Apartments on the west side since Dec. 18, with the latest on Saturday, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

Fire officials, who also fought an unrelated cooking fire at the apartments on Dec. 21, said the complex has had as unusually high number of fires.

"In an apartment complex where you see that kind of stuff, yes, that would seem like an abnormal amount," said Capt. Justin Sparks of the Wayne Township Fire Department.

Fire officials said aging wiring in the 38-year-old building is likely to blame for the frequent fires, but investigators said they found no major violations at the complex.

Eighty-six minor violations were identified during the most recent inspection, but Sparks said the apartment's management company has always been cooperative in fixing the issues.

Apartment managers refused to talk to Spencer on Saturday or say if anything was being done to prevent future fires.

Resident Amanda Johnson said she isn't waiting around to find out.

"Oh, we're definitely going to move. We're definitely not staying here," she said.

Sparks said concerned residents should talk to the property manager or call the fire department at 317-246-6217.
