INDIANAPOLIS -- The city of Indianapolis is rushing to fix frozen hydrants that have hampered firefighters' efforts in the bitter temperatures.Already this week, a lack of water supply has delayed fighting two major blazes -- one Monday that destroyed the Texas Roadhouse restaurant in the 1400 block of North Shadeland Avenue, where three hydrants were found to be frozen, and another Tuesday night that consumed three businesses in the 4800 block of East Michigan Street.Veolia Water Company has 12 hydrant specialists on staff, and said it will make one available to firefighters 24 hours a day as long as the cold weather lasts, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported."We'll go back out to these hydrants, inspect them, figure out what is happening with them, repair them, if necessary, and continue to do that from now on," said spokesman Paul Whitmore. "That is our responsibility, and it frustrates us, too, and we want to make sure they work."Firefighters said that when they respond to a scene, they're on edge about frozen hydrant failures."We actually talked about it this morning," said Capt. Chris Major. "And it happened so soon after we talked about it, that they knew what we needed to do to get water on the fire."Some community leaders are calling on the city to make sure the work is being done correctly."People need to know this is a public safety emergency," said Rev. James Jackson of the Fervent Prayer Church. "We need to have our own people from our city checking to see if Veolia is doing what they were contracted to do."Veolia crews will begin the process of inspecting 4,200 so-called, slow draining hydrants and, if necessary, they will re-inspect all 36,000 hydrants in the city.
