INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman died after she was struck twice, once by a hit-and-run driver, as she tried to cross an Indianapolis street Thursday night, police said.

Jane Laing, 32, was crossing 82nd Street just east of Allison Pointe Boulevard in the Castleton area just before 8 p.m. when she was struck the first time, said Sgt. Paul Thompson.

"When the driver of the car that struck her initially got out to render aid, he observed another vehicle strike the woman as she was in the roadway," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson. "The second vehicle left the scene."

Laing was transported to Methodist Hospital, where she died at 9:30 p.m.

Police said Friday that they were looking for a silver or gray late-model Hyundai in connection with the hit-and-run.

According to a police report, Laing was employed by Regency Place of Castleton, a rehabilitative nursing center, and was walking to a nearby Marsh to get something for a patient when she was struck.

The driver who first struck Laing was not injured. He told police that he saw Laing before hitting her, but slid on a snow-covered street and couldn't avoid the accident.

Witnesses were unable to provide a description of the second vehicle that hit Laing.

Police asked anyone with information about the vehicle that left the scene to call police or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
