Work Begins On North Side Widening Project

2 Bridges To Be Demolished Over I-465

A major construction project got under way on Monday, creating some delays on Indianapolis' north side.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will begin demolishing bridges over Interstate 465 on Westfield Boulevard and North River Road as part of a north side widening project, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported.

"Certainly (that area of) Indy gets some of the biggest traffic volume. This intersection is reaching old age, so we need to rebuild the pavement and make sure it stays smooth and safe for years to come," said INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield.

The project will add two lanes in each direction.

During the construction, the bridges will be closed and I-465 will be restricted, although most of the work will be done at night and on the weekends.

"We're working in such a way that we're trying to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible," Wingfield said. "By doing work above at night, that's something we can help."

Officials suggest drivers use College and Keystone avenues and Allisonville Road as alternate routes.

"It's a big inconvenience but, again, looking at what the whole picture is, it's understandable," said driver Melvin Mays.

The project is expected to last until June, after which INDOT will start work on Keystone Avenue and Allisonville Road.
