Sole GOP Prosecutor Hopeful Drops Out

Helen Marchal Ends Bid, Leaves GOP Without Candidate

The sole Republican hopeful for the job of Marion County prosecutor has dropped out of the race.

Current prosecutor's office Chief of Staff Helen Marchal ended her bid on Tuesday, citing the realization of how a condensed, nine-month campaign would tax her and her family, including her three young children, according to a statement.

Current Republican prosecutor, Carl Brizzi, announced he would not seek a third term on Jan. 14, two days before the filing deadline.

"Helen is a good Republican and someone for whom I have always had great personal respect," said Marion County Republican Central Committee Chairman Tom John in a statement. "I know from conversations with her the decision was not made lightly and thus believe that it was the right decision."

John said former Marion County prosecutor and Indianapolis public safety director Scott Newman would help lead a search for a Republican candidate.

Applications will be accepted until Feb. 5, he said.

Three Democrats are also seeking the office -- Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes, trial attorney Terry Curry and former state representative David Orentlicher.

A new prosecutor will take the reins in January 2011.
