MUNCIE, Ind. -- A Muncie baby sitter was arrested on charges of neglect after two infants died in her care.Tina Byrd, 43, called police on Jan. 19 afternoon to report that 4-month-old Matthew Cheng had died at her home at 3301 W. Noel Drive, said Sgt. Mike Engle.Byrd told police she put the boy down for a nap, but then couldn't wake him up.But investigators said Byrd was seen on surveillance video at a local Walgreens store shopping when she said she was watching the boy."She was supposed to be taking care of the child, when we know she was at a Walgreens without the child in her care," said Muncie police Sgt. Linda Cook.On Wednesday, Byrd was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice. Her 19-year-old daughter, Kassandra Byrd, a Ball State University social work major, was also preliminarily charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice.Investigators said she lied about who was caring for the children, too.In November, police responded to the same home after Tina Byrd called to report that 2-month-old John Wenniger had died.An autopsy on the boy was inconclusive, but Engle said the circumstances of the death were similar."Here we have two unrelated children, happening pretty much in the same circumstances," Cook said. "Then, with all the discrepancies in all the stories of all the people involved, it raises a lot of red flags with us."Police said the charges related only to the death of Cheng.Investigators originally said Tina Byrd provided baby sitting services through a local church, but the church later denied being involved with her.Neighbors were both shocked and saddened to hear about what happened."There was never any trouble. The kids would come around in the summertime to mow the yards," said Kate Dobbs. "They would come around in the winter and want to shovel your driveway.""I feel sorry for the parents of the two babies. It's just heartbreaking to me," said neighbor Keith Stiller.Police said charges related to the baby who died in November could be forthcoming.
