DECATUR COUNTY, Ind. -- An Indiana State Police trooper was injured early Sunday when he confronted a driver wanted on multiple warrants, prompting a police chase, officials said.Trooper Chris Howell, 38, stopped to assist the driver of a vehicle stopped on the shoulder of westbound Interstate 74 near the 133 mile-marker in Decatur County just after midnight.Howell said he suspected Brian Evans Graves, 51, of Indianapolis was intoxicated, and then discovered that he had three active arrest warrants and was listed as a habitual traffic violator. When Howell attempted to take Graves into custody, he said Graves ran and tried to get back into his vehicle, pushing Howell during the scuffle and speeding away.Howell called dispatch and gave a description of Graves and his vehicle, and requested an ambulance for himself.Shelbyville police spotted Graves a short time later, and gave chase when he wouldn't stop, police said. The pursuit continued into Marion County and ended just before 1:30 a.m. near the 94 mile-marker on I-74 when Indianapolis police deployed stop sticks, police said.Graves was arrested and transported to the Shelby County Jail.Howell was transported to the Decatur County Hospital in Greensburg, where he was treated for a contusion on the back of his head and a cut to his finger. He was later released.Graves will be formally charged later this week in Decatur County with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle as a habitual traffic violator, resisting law enforcement and battery on a police officer, and could also face charges in Shelby and Marion counties. He was already wanted on a parole violation for possession of cocaine in Marion County and failure to appear on traffic violation charges out of Switzerland and Rush counties.
