Battle Ready Crews Await Next Storm

DPW Says It's Ready For Round 2

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works is making preparations for a second winter storm within days.

Trucks began loading up with salt late Monday morning for a storm that will roll in late Monday night and stick around through early Wednesday morning, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

DPW crews didn't finish their work on the last winter storm until Sunday morning.

By Monday afternoon, 83 trucks hit the road to prep streets in anticipation of the new storm.

DPW said its effort to battle snow was enhanced by 37 new trucks that came online this season.

"They have been a great benefit," said DPW spokesman Steve Hardiman. "Those trucks allow more salt capacity, so when we're out in the field salting, we don't have to come back as often. Those drivers can stay out in the field a little longer."

Hardiman said the new trucks also cut down on the number of maintenance issues DPW had with an aging fleet, and apply salt in a more consistent fashion.

"Right now we are averaging 200 pounds of salt per lane mile. In previous years, much more was put down than needed to be put down," he said. "We're able to conserve some funds in regard to that, and it's working well for us."

The year's snow budget is $6.8 million. While no hard figures are available, Hardiman said about half of the budget has been exhausted.

Unless central Indiana gets several more bouts of wintry weather, Hardiman thinks there is enough money left to get through the season.
