A 72-year-old Taylorsville woman shot and killed her 51-year-old son before taking her own life, police said.

The bodies of Saundra Harter and Greg Thomas were found in a mobile home at 7780 Parkland Drive on Saturday, where they had likely been for at least a week, said Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett.

Investigators said forensic evidence showed that Hater shot her son as he was lying in his bed, while she was found dead in the living room of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

The gun used in both shootings was found under her body, Gorbett said.

A receipt found in the home showed that Harter had bought the gun on Jan. 26, investigators said, while the mail had not been collected at the home since Jan. 28.

Police said that there no suicide note, just handwritten instructions asking that Harter's cat be given to a friend.

Family members told police they had no indication anything was wrong between Harter and her son.
