INDIANAPOLIS -- An Army military police officer from Indianapolis was killed Saturday in Iraq, the U.S. Department of Defense said Monday.
Pvt. Jesse M. Halling, 19, was fatally shot near a military police station in Tikrit when his unit was attacked by grenade and small-arms fire, the department said. Further information about the shooting was not immediately available.
Halling (pictured, left) was a 2002 graduate of Ben Davis High School, where he was involved in a Marine ROTC program, RTV6's Ericka Flye reported."He was remembered by his counselor and the people who are here today as a well-liked young man," Principal David Marcotte said.Halling joined the Army in August and was assigned to 401st Military Police Company, Fort Hood, Texas, the Defense Department said.His group left Texas for Iraq in March, the Defense Department said.The high school last week introduced a memorial wall dedicated to Ben Davis students who died in the military. Halling's name will be added to the 13 that already are included, Marcotte said.
