CARMEL, Ind. -- Few additional details were released during a news conference Wednesday morning about the investigation involving three senior members of the Carmel High School basketball team in a hazing incident.Carmel Clay School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Swennson, Carmel High School Principal John Williams and Police Chief Michael Fogarty addressed the situation, but provided no new insight into the events of Jan. 22.Video:
Uncut: Carmel Hazing News ConferenceThey recounted the measures the school system takes to investigate allegations and said that they cannot provide additional information at this point.School officials earlier said three 18-year-old members of the basketball team attacked two freshmen on a bus while on a trip home from Terre Haute.Rampant rumors have been swirling in recent weeks about the nature of the attack, which Carmel High School Principal John Williams described earlier as "bullying," "hazing" and "physical assault.""All students should feel protected at school and school events. We cannot answer or discuss specific details of our investigation," Williams said."To hear some of the rumors is difficult because they're simply fabrications," Swennson said, "but we feel our focus on students is really where everyone needs to be."He said the school district was made aware of the incident on Feb. 16, shared that information with Carmel police and began its own investigation.Discipline was handed out that day, school officials said, but details of that discipline weren't released. The school declined to confirm a rumor that the seniors had been expelled, but said that hearings would be held before that form of discipline could happen.Police were similarly cautious about revealing any information about their investigation, but said possible charges could be criminal confinement and battery."Because of the nature of it, we're not going to disclose any particulars," Fogarty said.Officials also declined to discuss information about a video that may have been taken from the bus. School officials said they are also looking into whether there may have been previous incidents."The school corporation and the school administration cannot comment in any way," Swennson said. "I appreciate everyone's understanding about that."Authorities said the hazing incident happened near the back of the bus and that three coaches and a bus driver at the front of the bus claimed not to have heard or seen anything.Parents on Wednesday had mixed reactions on the school's handling of the situation."I'd like to get the information out so justice can be served," said Carmel High School Parent Rick Walsh."I am sure they are so conflicted about their responsibilities and the privacy issues," said Leslie Davis. "It must be very difficult for them to work their way through that."School officials said an announcement will be made to students, and a phone call will be made to parents' home to inform everyone that bullying behavior will not be tolerated and that anyone who experiences it should tell an adult.
