COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Nearly 200 workers at Columbus-based Cummins will be laid off this week, the company said. After Friday, one shift of about 400 workers will stay on at the MidRange Engine Plant now that Chrysler has completed its production ramp up for the 2010 Ram pickup truck, said spokesman Mark Land.In May, production at the plant was halted and 720 workers were laid off due to the automaker's bankruptcy, but production was ramped back up in July.Land said it's unclear how long the layoffs will last, but said employees will be eligible to transfer to other Cummins plants if workers are needed there.
