A recycling push aimed at busy commuters will cover all corners of the city this month, collecting tons of unwanted electronics, cardboard and, for the first time, foam.

Green Piece Indy will host its third series of Rush Hour Recycling events this month, with Friday's push collecting more than 11,000 pounds of recyclable materials.

The six collection efforts run from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and will span March and early April at sites across the city, targeting morning commuters who are tight on time.

"It just kind of popped into my head one day: I wonder if we made recycling part of a person's daily routine if they would be more willing to participate," said Green Piece Indy co-founder Renee Sweany. "This year, we want to make it available to as many people as possible."

Commuters can bring old electronics, cardboard and clean, white, EPS foam labeled No. 6 to be recycled. Workforce Inc. will safely dispose of the electronics, while Createc Corporation will help reuse the foam, Sweany said.

Last year's 10 Rush Hour Recycling events collected more than 50,000 tons of electronics and cardboard, earning Green Piece Indy a Sustainability Award from Mayor Greg Ballard.

"We learned a lot from each of last year's events about how to keep the traffic flow moving," Sweany said. "We would have several cars pull up all at once, and our volunteers spread out and got it done."

Sweany, along with Meghan McCormick, publish a twice-weekly e-mail with tips on how to live a greener lifestyle in Indianapolis, and put out an annual green coupon book, Green Savings Indy.

The e-mail list, now in its third year, has more than 3,000 subscribers, while the second edition of the eco-friendly savings publication will be available on Earth Day, April 22.

Sweany said all of the green efforts are interconnected.

"People crave this information. They let things like electronics pile up in their garages and basement and they just need help," she said. "It makes me feels good about where Indianapolis is headed."
