INDIANAPOLIS -- Police have turned to neighbors for help solving a homicide that happened nearly two months ago on the city's northwest side.Sonny Stingley, 37, was fatally shot at his home near 30th Street and Georgetown Road in January.People who live in the neighborhood haven't been cooperating in the police investigation, so officers went door-to-door Saturday with community leaders in tow, hoping to engender trust in residents that might result in tips, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported. As they canvassed the neighborhood, officers also raised awareness about Weed and Seed, a program established by the U.S. Department of Justice as a means for residents to get to know officers and work together on crime prevention."You can give input, and this affects your community," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Grimes.Police are certain that people who live near Stingley know something about his slaying that they haven't shared."I'd like to see them get something done, stop some of this crime -- especially the killing and stuff that's senseless," said John Cummings, who has lived in the area for 21 years.Cummings said he watches out for the neighborhood, but he knows others turn a blind eye."You used to be able to turn on the TV and they talk about all the stuff going on on the east side," Cummings said. "Now, you turn it on and you see all the crime on the northwest side."Officers and residents who are part of the effort spent two hours in the neighborhood, talking to people and handing out information about Weed and Seed. They hope more people will come to monthly meetings and take an active role in crime prevention."If every house was a crime watch house, and they reported crime, all of these eyes and ears everywhere, there wouldn't be any crime," Grimes said.Weed and Seed meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at the Eagledale Library branch.Anyone with information about the Stingley slaying can call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
