$650,000 In Damage Done In Indy's 8th Fire Of Day

Historic Apartment Building Damaged

POSTED: 5:58 am EST March 7, 2010

About $650,000 in damage was done to three buildings, including one on the National Register of Historic Places, in a two-alarm blaze, Indianapolis' eighth fire within 24 hours.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was called to the 100 block of East Ninth Street at about 2:15 a.m. The blaze originated in an abandoned four-unit apartment building that had been empty for three years.

A man who lives in an adjacent home was evacuated, but that home suffered serious damage.

The fire also spread to the 14-unit Cathcart apartment building. All occupants of that historic building, constructed in the early 1900s, got out safely.

"That building suffered slight smoke damage, mild water damage, broken windows, and all utilities have been shut off to the building," said Indianapolis fire Capt. Rita Reith.

About 80 firefighters were called in to battle the blaze. No injuries were reported.

The vacant building was destroyed, a $450,000 loss, according to Battalion Chief Dave Harris. Damage to the home was estimated at $150,000, and damage to the Cathcart was estimated at $50,000.

Cathcart residents were allowed to go into their homes by firefighter escort to retrieve personal items.

The American Red Cross is helping those affected by the fire.
