INDIANAPOLIS -- Hoosiers set to spring forward this weekend could end up spending more with longer days ahead.

Indiana will observe daylight saving time this Sunday, moving clocks ahead one hour.

It's a welcome change for many businesses that hope to lure customers in as the sun stays out longer, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

"I think the extra hour gives people the extra incentive to stick around downtown, maybe have a drink, get something to eat real quick before they decide to go home," said Brian Zajac, a manager at Scotty's Brewhouse downtown.

A University of California Santa Barbara study also found that Hoosier households could pay $8.6 million more annually in electricity bills due to higher air conditioning costs on hot afternoons and higher heating costs on cold mornings thanks to daylight saving time.

Still, state economic leaders said the measure has helped to keep thousands of jobs that would have been lost if Indiana hasn't made the switch.

"Companies like Medco that pay between $60,000 and $90,000 would not have located their distribution center here because it's just too confusing to switch times every six months," said Indiana Economic Development Corporation CEO Mitch Roob.

Daylight saving time became law in Indiana in the spring of 2005 and was put in place the following spring.
