A man was killed early Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car as he tried to cross a street.

Plainfield police Lt. Jill Lees said William Woodruff, 76, of Plainfield, was attempting to cross Stanley Road at Chad Court when a car hit him.

"A blue Ford Crown Vic was traveling westbound on Stanley Road and struck him while he was out for his routine morning walk," Lees said in a news release.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene after the crash. Woodruff was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police are trying to determine how the crash happened. The driver's name wasn't released.
