Prosecutor: Woman Donated Plasma Tainted With HIV

Woman Knew She Was HIV Positive, Officials Say

An Indianapolis woman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to transferring plasma tainted with HIV.

Tammy Denise Sharp, 39, is accused of donating tainted plasma on Dec. 3, 2008, at PlasmaCare at 502 N. Capitol Ave.

Court documents indicated Sharp signed an affidavit that said she was not HIV positive. That document warned Sharp that it is a Class C felony if she knowingly donated HIV positive blood or plasma.

Doctors told Sharp in 2005 that she was HIV positive, officials said.

"She was informed by a doctor that she was HIV positive in September of 2005. She knew she had HIV," said Marion County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Mario Massillamany.

More than 1,000 people donate plasma at the facility every year. The company said in a statement that they are thorough in testing, and that none of Sharp's donation was used, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

"We do extensive and thorough testing using the latest technology. Any donation that tests positive is quarantined and destroyed," the statement read.

The plasma that is extracted at the facility goes toward making drugs used to treat hemophilia and immune deficiencies

Sharp was being held Tuesday on $100,000 bond.
