Police: Officer Drank On Duty, Gave Booze To Minors

Franklin Officer Disciplined For Numerous Violations

UPDATED: 5:59 pm EST March 10, 2010

A Franklin police detective was demoted and placed on a 45-day suspension for numerous violations of the department's rules, officials said Tuesday.

Officer Bryan Burton was accused of drinking alcohol while on duty and supplying booze to underage informants.

Franklin Police Chief Stan Lynn said Burton violated eight different parts of the code of conduct by having sexually suggestive conversations with female informants and failure to report an accident.

Franklin Mayor Fred Paris said Burton was undercover for two years on a drug detail and did not have enough supervision.

"I don't believe you necessarily throw away a career, or throw away an individual, for making bad decisions or stepping over the line. I believe, in this particular case … we put an officer in an undercover situation without enough leadership and follow up that he needed."

Burton's suspension is unpaid. He can reapply for a detective position in a year if he undergoes an alcohol evaluation program.

Some residents told 6News' Derrik Thomas they think Burton's punishment is too lenient.

"I think criminal charges should be brought up. If you provided alcohol to minors, wouldn't you have criminal charges brought up on you?" said Noah Davis.

"I think he should have been fired, too. He's supposed to be a public servant. He was on the clock. He's supposed to be a role model for our young people," said Deena Fisher. "If we are not allowed to drink and drive, or drink while we are on the clock at work, why should he be?"
