PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- A distribution company plans to lay off nearly all the workers at its central Indiana warehouse operations, costing more than 250 jobs.CEVA Logistics told Plainfield town officials that the layoffs were being made because it lost a client that is reorganizing its parts distribution system. The company didn't identify the customer and said the layoffs would take place in stages between May 10 and June 30.Town Manager Rich Carlucci told 6News' Renee Jameson that he found out about the layoffs in a letter, and that the company will not return his calls."I had no advanced warning or any inkling that that was taking place," he said. "To absorb 250 jobs all at once is pretty tough to do."There is some good news for the area -- earlier this week, s2f, a logistics firm, announced it will launch operations in Plainfield, hiring 250 people by 2013."Those things always take time to start up, but we're real positive about that. We think that's going to be a good project," Carlucci said.Besides warehouse and logistics jobs, Tina Johnson with Manpower, an employment services company, said other companies are hiring in the area as well. She said the company's placement numbers have more than doubled from the same time last year."I think it's going to continue. We see at Manpower every day that it is going to continue, and not just with the current customers that we have, but every day, we're adding new customers," she said.Carlucci said he is also confident that things will start looking up."We've go a couple of other projects that I can't identify that are in the pipeline that look pretty good. That will maybe help offset some of these loses," he said.Netherlands-based CEVA has facilities in more than 170 countries.
