Communities To Google: Pick Me!

8 Indiana Vie To Be Google Test Market

Some Indiana communities are joining hundreds across the country vying to test market Google's new ultra high-speed Internet.

The broadband service is expected to run more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections, according to the official Google blog.

Leaders in Anderson, Bloomington, Carmel, Fishers, Fort Wayne, Noblesville, South Bend and Westfield are already touting their communities' attributes to the search giant, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

"Westfield already has its own fiber optic network in place today," said Mayor Andy Cook. "I think it would help us immensely in marketing a city that's already quite marketable."

The city has set up a Facebook.com page to get community members involved with the push.

To the east, Fishers claims it's already the fastest town in Hamilton County, making it the perfect choice for Google.

"That's why we're Fast Fishers, not only from our growth, but from having high-speed fiber that would give our businesses and future businesses that locate here a great advantage," said Fishers Town Manager Gary Huff.

Jon DiGregory, who works with Cantaloupe, a video storytelling company in Fishers, said he can't even imagine the Internet speed of Google's proposed service.

"It would be like taking an Indy 500 car on (Interstate) 465. It would be great," he said. "I think the things we can do here faster like uploading videos and converting them and getting them to our clients quicker … is only going to help make our business bigger, better."

But the Indiana communities have some intense competition. Topeka, Kan., has gone so far as to unofficially change its name to “Google, Kan.,” in an effort to win the bid.

Anderson will host a Google rally on Monday at 11 a.m. outside the Paramount Theatre. Residents are encouraged to wear Google colors -- red, yellow, blue and green -- and the city will film the event to submit as part of its proposal.

Google is accepting responses from interested communities with between 50,000 and 500,000 residents until March 26 and expects to announce its target communities later this year.
