NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Two girls who fell through the ice on Morse Reservoir on Wednesday were pulled to safety by their mother and neighbors. The 4- and 7-year-old sisters, Sydney and Jessie, were playing on the ice near a home in the 1300 block of Willow Court just before 4 p.m. when they fell through, Noblesville fire officials said.Joyce and Randy Peters, who live nearby, rushed to help."They were both screaming," Joyce Peters told 6News' Sarah Cornell. "Syndey's head was bobbing down further. Jessie was still up, so I knew we didn't have much time."She jumped into the water and pulled Sydney to shore, where Randy Peters performed CPR until medics arrived. At first, the girl wasn't responsive."We can't let her die, we can't let her die," Joyce Peters said. "He started CPR. As soon as I could, I got up and started helping. I was rubbing her arms, anything to get her to get some feeling."The girls' mother -- Stephanie Moore -- pulled Jessie from the reservoir. Both girls were taken to Riverview Hospital in stable condition. They were being treated for hypothermia Wednesday night.Fire officials said letting children play on ice can be dangerous, especially when it's cloudy, gray and thawing."Initially, if you get on, you're very young and you're really light, it may take a little bit. As you move, it's going to flex and bend and probably, eventually you'll fall through," said Noblesville Fire Division Chief Rick Russell. It's not known how long the girls were playing on the ice, but Russell said they were likely in the water for about five minutes. The Peters said they are just grateful they came out when they did."We're not heroes at all. It's the same thing we would hope they would do for one of ours if they would see it," Joyce Peters said. The girls are expected to make a full recovery. Moore was home when the incident happened. She told neighbors she thought the girls were playing in front of the house.
