An Indianapolis man was found fatally stabbed behind a gas station on the city's south side just minutes after he had been in the store Wednesday night.

Officers were called to the Speedway gas station at 1207 S. East Street just before 9 p.m., said Sgt. Paul Thompson.

They found that Charles Lewis, 53, had apparently been struck in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later determined that Lewis had been stabbed multiple times. He was seen inside the gas station 20 minutes before he was found dead.

"Our investigators are talking with neighbors and potential witnesses trying to identify a suspect," Thompson said Wednesday night.

Police asked anyone with information to call police or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
