A man was arrested Friday in connection with the stabbing death of a man found behind an Indianapolis gas station.

Charles Lewis, 53, was found dead outside the Speedway gas station at 1207 S. East Street just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, just minutes after he had been inside the store, police said.

Bernard Hawkins, 42, was arrested Friday morning in connection with the slaying.

Police said an anonymous caller told detectives that she had been at a home with Lewis, Hawkins and others Wednesday night when a fight broke out. She said she saw Hawkins stab Lewis in the chest with a box cutter.

Investigators said Lewis then walked to the gas station, got some napkins to clean up a wound on his face and collapsed outside, where he died.

Hawkins was preliminarily charged with murder.
