INDIANAPOLIS -- The owners of a south side Indianapolis convenience store where a clerk was killed during a robbery last year have been fined for not doing enough to keep employees safe.
Becky Hough, 62, was fatally shot in November while working overnight at the Village Pantry in the 1400 block of South Meridian Street. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Friday that the store had been fined $67,500 for failing to report the work-related death of an employee within eight hours of the incident, and for not maintaining a safe work environment. The agency reported that the store had been robbed more than 30 times since 2000, but that no additional safety measures had been put in place to protect employees.Neighbors told 6News' Ericka Flye that they believe the store has become an easy target."Even if it was hiring a security guard at night, or providing a window where customers could come up to the window after hours," said Stephanie Gleason, who lives nearby. "I feel very unsafe. I am terrified to go up there at night, as many times as I've seen them robbed."Village Pantry employees declined to comment Friday evening.
Police arrested two 19-year-old men in the slaying and robbery. Hough had worked at the store for more than 20 years.
