Street Name Change Aimed At Cutting Confusion

Some Say Carmel Change Only Creates More Confusion

Carmel's decision to change the name of 131st Street to Main Street is supposed to decrease confusion, but some think it will have the opposite effect, at least in the short term.

Sixty-seven new signs went up Monday as the city changed most portions of the road to the new name, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

The road is now known as Main Street from the Boone County line to U.S. 31 and from Keystone Avenue to River Road.

Previously, when motorists drove east or west on Main Street in Carmel, the road eventually became 131st Street.

"Main Street now is all the way from end to end, from River Road to the Boone County line," said Dave Huffman, Carmel street commissioner.

Even with the change, a pocket of the road near Towne Road will retain the 131st Street designation.

From Towne Road to the Boone County line on the north side of 131st is a Westfield address, and because that community already has a Main Street, the name there won't change.

The changes will take time for some drivers and residents to get used to.

"I think it will make it probably a little bit more complicated," said Clark Williams. "I think it should stay 131st Street versus Main Street on the other side."

"It (131st Street) makes logical sense as far as the street progression and having people come to your home," said Mike Kuharik.

Still, city officials said the change will provide better consistency for all of Carmel.

"I believe it will help immensely with 911," Huffman said. "They will have one name for this long of a street."

To avoid duplicate addresses, some Carmel homeowners will have to change their house numbers now that they live on Main Street.
