INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man was charged Monday with battery in connection to an incident in which his 4-month-old son suffered critical injuries.Indianapolis police said Elvin Cabrera, 20, brought the boy to the emergency room at Wishard Memorial Hospital the night of March 5 with an unexplained severe head injury. He told hospital officials that he had been feeding his son when the boy began to choke and became limp and lethargic. The boy was transferred to Riley Hospital For Children, where doctors said the infant had severe bleeding on the brain, injuries consistent with abuse, according to the probable cause affidavit. The boy's mother, Soledad Hernandez-Aguilar, 19, told police that Cabrera was caring for their son while she was at work that day, and that the infant had been fine when she left.Cabrera was arrested last week on a charge of aggravated battery and was charged Monday with one count of battery. The infant was listed as a no-information patient at the hospital, but was last said to be in critical condition.
