Autopsy: No Obvious Foul Play In Body Discovery
Speculation Centers On Man Missing Since December
POSTED: 2:59 pm EDT March 15, 2010
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- An autopsy on Monday revealed little new information about the discovery of a body over the weekend in a wooded area of Vigo County, near the Clay County line.Indiana State Police said the body is that of a middle-aged white man and that there were no obvious signs of foul play."A positive identification cannot be made at this time, due to the condition of the deceased," said ISP Sgt. Joe Watts. "Investigators are awaiting the results of scientific analysis to determine the identity."Police said that process could be completed over the course of a few days or a few weeks. The partially decomposed body was found Sunday near the 11000 block of Grotto Avenue, less than two miles north of U.S. 40.Police said that the man's clothing matched that described in a missing person's case. ISP did not elaborate on that, but it was widely speculated that it could Charles Raymond Chumley, 30, who was last seen in the area on Dec. 8, 2009. His wife reported him missing two days later.Chumley's wife said she had been with her husband when he left her in the vehicle in a driveway and walked into a wooded area nearby, telling her that he would return in 15 minutes."Detectives continue to be aware of the similarities between the found body and an active missing person's case … however, investigators are not speculating at this time on the identity," Watts said.Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Sam Stearly at 812-299-1151.
