Woman's Neglect Arrest Stems From Parking Confusion

A woman who left her 2-year-old son in a car to go shopping couldn't remember where she'd parked the car, resulting in her arrest, police said.

Indianapolis police were called to the 400 block of North Pennsylvania Street at about 6:15 p.m. Monday, after Penny Sparks, 42, sought help to find her car.

Sparks told officers that she wasn't sure where she had parked the car when she went shopping in Circle Centre at about 2:15 p.m., according to a police report.

Sparks told officers that she had left the child, who she told a 911 dispatcher was 6, in her car because he was sleeping. Officers rode with her in search of the car, which was found in the 100 block of East New York Street, officers said.

The child was still asleep when Sparks and officers found the car. With temperatures in the mid-40s, a paramedic was called to the scene.

Medics said the child had symptoms of hypothermia. He was taken to Riley Hospital for Children to be checked, but was not believed to be injured.

Sparks was arrested on a child neglect charge. Police said she has a history of mental illness.
