Police: Man Assaulted Officer After Short Chase

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 35-year-old man was shot and killed by police Tuesday night after he attacked an officer on Indianapolis' east side, investigators said.The incident happened just after 7:30 p.m. near 34th Street and Wellington Avenue, south of 38th Street and Interstate 465, said Sgt. Paul Thompson.Police said Officer Seth Ferrell, 24, was trying to pull over Warren Collins, of Indianapolis, on a traffic violation near 30th Street and Richardt Avenue, but Collins refused to stop.Ferrell said Collins hit his squad car during the two-minute chase, and then abandoned his vehicle in a field and tried to run.Thompson said Collins confronted the officer, attacking him and knocking him to the ground, prompting the officer to pull his gun and fire at the man."The officer was physically assaulted," Thompson said. "The officer fired in self-defense."Collins was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 8 p.m.Ferrell, a two-year veteran of the force, was taken to Methodist Hospital in stable condition. He was later released.Collins was operating on a suspended driver's license as a habitual traffic violator, police said.He also had an extensive criminal history, including reckless homicide, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm without a permit.Thompson said it wasn't known if Collins used or was in possession of a weapon at the time he was shot.
