Court Affirms Man's Prison Sentence In Dog Attack

Appeals Court Rejects Lee Carroll's Appeal

The Indiana Court of Appeals said Tuesday that an Indianapolis man whose dogs viciously attacked a neighbor, causing her leg to be amputated, deserves his two-year prison sentence.

The court rejected the appeal of Lee Carroll, who admitted his two pit bulls attacked Brenda Hill, 68, in January 2009.

In the ruling, the court said Carroll had tried to minimize his responsibility in the attack.

Life for Hill since the attack hasn't been the same, and it will never be. She was taking out of the trash when the two pit bulls stopped her in her tracks.

"I never thought nothing like this would ever happen to me. (I was) minding my own business," Hill said. "They were chewing on my arm and started mauling me, and I just started praying."

Hill passed out and awoke to medics rushing her to the hospital. The injuries were so bad that doctors were unable to save the leg.

"It's a lot of things I can't do," Hill said, more than a year after the attack.

Hill's son helps her, and she is learning how to better navigate her motorized chair. Hill now stays away from all dogs, but she doesn't think they are inherently vicious.

"They don't have to be that way, if they're not trained to be that way," she said.

Hill said she has frequent memories of the brutal attack, but won't let them keep her from living life.

"I won't give up. I just can't give up," she said.

The dogs were euthanized less than a month after the attack.
