Schools Show No Movement On Start Date Change

Local Districts Show Little Interest In Voluntary Start Date Change

Indiana schools have been urged to move back the start of the school year voluntarily, but so far, few have heeded the warning.

School lobbyists sent a letter to board members and superintendents in February cautioning that if they didn't move back the start date at least a little on their own, the Legislature would eventually do it for them.

It comes after lawmakers failed to pass a bill requiring school to start the day after Labor Day, but the issue is expected to be brought again in upcoming sessions.

6News' Norman Cox on Wednesday found that many school districts are not planning any changes.

Wayne Township school officials said that the current calendar fits student needs.

"We certainly are keeping our ear to the ground with what's happening in the Legislature, but we feel that the most important thing for our students is to create a calendar that, for them, gives them the best chance to succeed academically," said spokeswoman Mary McDermott-Lang.

Hamilton Southeastern said the current calendar is "popular with the community," while Perry Township reported it has had "no discussions" about changing the start date.

Center Grove said it had discussed the issue with the teachers' union, and the "talks didn't come to fruition," and an Indianapolis Public Schools spokeswoman said the district wants year-round school and has no interest in a later start.

The main lawmaker pushing for calendar change, Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, said he's been told that Carmel is interested in doing something, but the administrator in charge of the Carmel schedule said he does not know of any changes in the works. He said the district's schedule is set through 2012.

Most school districts did tell Cox that they would listen to parents if they expressed concern about the current school schedule.
