INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who was fatally shot by a police officer during a confrontation Tuesday night had numerous previous run-ins with police and served four years of a 10-year sentence on a reckless homicide charge.Warren Collins, 35, attacked Indianapolis police Officer Seth Ferrell, 24, after a short chase, striking the officer in the head before Ferrell pulled his gun and shot Collins multiple times, killing him.Collins was a habitual traffic offender who was convicted of reckless homicide after a May 2004 crash in which Earl Jamison Sr., 75, was killed. Collins was also scheduled to appear in court at the end of this month on a charge of driving while suspended.Jamison's son, Earl Jamison Jr., was working security at Indianapolis International Airport on the night nearly six years ago when he was told his father had been killed in a crash."I couldn't even leave. I just had to sit there, and they had me in a room for about an hour," Jamison said. "It's just something you don't even want to hear or think about."The elder Jamison's car was struck by another vehicle driven by Collins as it fled a police chase at 38th and Illinois streets. Jamison died at the scene, leaving four children behind.Jamison said he felt sorry for Collins' family, even though he had led a checkered life with multiple arrests."You'd think he would learn when he was sitting in prison for four years," Jamison said. "Obviously, he didn't even learn nothing."Jamison said family gatherings are still difficult. Knowing Collins is dead doesn't make the loss of his dad any easier.Ferrell suffered bruises and a broken hand in the shooting. Police called the shooting justified, but the department and a Marion County Grand Jury will investigate, per standard procedure.
